Why do they still sell 3-wire 240V range and dryer cords?
If 3-wire 240V range and dryer outlets have been outlawed by code over a decade ago (replaced by 4-wire outlets), why do they still sell 3-wire cords for people that buy new electric ranges and dryers? Now people have the inconvenience of having to buy and install a cord because these appliances never come with them because the manufacturers don’t know what type of outlet people have in their house.
I would suggest that they make all new electric ranges and dryers with the proper 4-wire cords, then let it be the responsibility of the purchaser to get an electrician to install the proper outlet if necessary. This would be one way to get all the now-illegal 3-wire outlets replaced with 4-wire ones.
Because people live in homes that were built before 1992 and The National Electric Code changed at that time. It would be very expensive if every house was expected to be brought up to code every 3 years.
The “now-illegal 3-wire outlets “, as you put it, is still legal in these older homes UNTIL remodeling occurs that causes the receptacle to be opened up. THEN it “shall” be brought up to code. Hope this helps to clear things up.
